The Laundromat Project

The Laundromat Project

Brooklyn, New York

2021 – 2023

The Laundromat Project (LP) is a non-profit arts organization dedicated in bringing positive change into communities of color by directly investing in multidisciplinary artists of color and community leaders.

In 2020 Bagchee architects in collaboration with the team at the LP began designing a new space for the LP in Bed-Stuy where LP had first started 15 years ago.

The long narrow space is separated into four spaces, the reception; which transforms into a community gathering space for artmaking and workshops, the program space; allowing for public movie screenings and talks with a small kitchenette, the office space, and the backyard for relaxation.

Project Team: Nandini Bagchee, Ngawang Tenzin.

The Laundromat Project (LP) is a non-profit arts organization dedicated in bringing positive change into communities of color by directly investing in multidisciplinary artists of color and community leaders.

The LP first started in Bed-Stuy offering engaging art workshops to the local black and brown community not in some gallery or museum but bringing the art to the people, in this case an actual laundromat. The organization eventually gained roots in the south Bronx providing various fellowships, residencies, and place-based art projects. The Laundromat Project has been supporting artists whose work deals with site-specific issues impacting the city’s Black and brown residents: gentrification and displacement; policing and community safety; climate change and food injustice. For the last five years, the organization has been sharing space in a two-bedroom-apartment-turned-community-hub in the South Bronx; but when it came time to find a more permanent home, they looked to their own history.
