We proposed a reconfiguration of the two floors of this duplex apartment in a land-marked condominium building in downtown Manhattan. The upper floor provided a series of semi-enclosed living, dining, kitchen areas to maximize light and created a flexible space for receiving guests. The monochromatic palate provided a casual elegance for everyday activities and a complementary backdrop for the Asian furniture pieces owned by the client. The lower floor was subdivided into three bedrooms to afford privacy and generate a comfortable atmosphere for their young daughters to invite their friends over. The dark stained floors and the thin profiles of the metal stair, metal door trims and sliding partitions tie the white interiors together and bring scale to this residence. The limited natural light is supplemented by rounded coves to bring mellow warmth inside this 1850’s industrial sugar factory building.
